Pack our bamboo straws, pack our pouch, get ready everything and we’re are good to go! On the weekend of 19th to 21st October 2018, Weaving Hearts participated in the Qube Night Market at Sutera Avenue from 6PM to 11PM.
Qube is a night market that sells foods, drinks, desserts and also arts & crafts. We are very thankful to be invited by the organizer, Shermaine, to participate in this event for as long as 3 days. This gave Weaving Hearts an opportunity and another outlet to promote awareness of the harm of using plastic straws.
Did you know that 500 Million of plastic straws are wasted in the U.S every single day? It is enough to circle around the earth 2.5 times! Plastic straw usage is also increasing in other countries including our own Malaysia too. We are the 8th most plastic wastage country in the world that used up to 31 Million plastic straws per year! Plastic is a non-biodegradable material that can be mold into pretty much anything. It is used by many manufacturers because the cost of plastic is cheap! Look around you now and you’ll see you’re living in a world of plastic. Trash Travels estimates that plastic bags can take up to 20 years to decompose, plastic bottles up to 450 years, and fishing line, 600 years. A lot of people realise that our earth is slowly dying, however, not many people are stepping out start to make changes on this. This is one of the many reasons for us to get involved in this event, to raise the awareness of plastic usage among people.
We were very excited about this event so we have prepped everything nicely, we cleaned our bamboo straws with vinegar and tagged our pouch individually before the Qube Night Market. Double checked everything before packing our bamboo straws into the pouch and we were good to go!
Finally on Friday (19/10/2018)! We arrived earlier at 4.30PM to set up our booth with a banner, poster and some pretty fairy lights!
It was not crowded with people on the first day due to the rain but we still got some people showing their interest in our bamboo straws!
They were so excited to contribute to saving our earth!
Things got better on the following two days, the Qube Night Market was crowded with people!
We got curious questions from the public like where did we get sources to our bamboo straws, why they don’t come in equal sizes, how to clean it and other questions that we were happy to answer to.
Our bamboo straws are 100% natural from the bamboo plants without any chemical or dyes, it is hand-crafted by our local artisan who owns a bamboo plantation in his hometown ─ Kudat. Bamboo straws are biodegradable straws that can be decomposed after being throw away. Because our bamboo straws are cut from the natural bamboo plants, their length or width is not uniform or equally same with one another, same goes for their colour too, some bamboo straws might have natural black spots or unequal colour that comes in either green or yellow. No bamboo straw is perfect, right?
Bamboo straws can be reused for as long as 8 months or depending on how you take care of them. How to clean a bamboo straw? A bamboo straw can be cleaned in many methods, it can be cleaned with a cleaning brush, by threading or even just soak it in soapy water and rinse it. If you want to clean it thoroughly, get a pot of hot water and add a spoon of vinegar in and soak your bamboo straw for 10 to 20 minutes, this can be done monthly. Make sure to dry your bamboo straw fully after rinsing in vinegar before consuming any drinks, don’t worry they dry up very quick!
Not only that, 50% of Weaving Heart’s profit will be used for community services like beach cleaning programs or to support Go Green projects. While the other 50% will be used to replenish new bamboo straws, pouches and also cleaning brushes.
Besides discontinuing plastic straws usage, you can also:
It’s not easy to change directly from plastic straw to bamboo straw, same for the grocery bags and lunch box too, most people don’t get used to it at first but trust me you will! Protect our environment and stop using plastics. Let’s swap to bamboo straw now!
